Woodspeak Acoustic Guitars — Two Bourgeois Masters, Building for Themselves
James Cook and James Witkus are not unknown quantities in the acoustic guitar world. Far from it. James Witkus is the Master Luthier at Bourgeois Guitars in Lewiston, Maine, personally overseeing the top and back voicing of every Bourgeois instrument alongside Dana Bourgeois himself and handpicking all tonewoods that go into the shop. His skills have been described as legendary in the world of acoustic guitar building. James Cook has been building electric guitars, basses, and acoustic instruments in Maine since at least 2009, sharing his craft publicly at events like the Waterville Public Library's Lunch with Luthiers series and developing a devoted regional following.
Together, the two James have channeled their combined expertise into Woodspeak, a side project built on a simple and compelling premise: two of the most experienced hands in one of America's finest acoustic guitar workshops building instruments entirely on their own terms, with no production schedule, no catalog constraints, and no compromises on materials or execution. Every Woodspeak acoustic is a custom one-of-a-kind instrument, and every one of them carries the accumulated knowledge of decades spent at the bench of one of the most respected boutique guitar operations in the country.
The Wood, Always the Wood
The name says everything about the philosophy. Woodspeak instruments begin with premium tonewoods selected for their acoustic character and visual beauty in equal measure, and the construction serves the wood rather than the other way around. Redwood, Madagascar rosewood, cocobolo, spruce, cedar, and mahogany have all appeared across the acoustic catalog, each combination chosen in service of a specific tonal goal and assembled with animal protein glue, ebony fretboards and bridges, custom ebony belly bridges, Gotoh 510 tuners, and a level of fit and finish that reflects the same standards applied daily at Bourgeois.
The GA-12, a short-scale 12-fret Grand Auditorium with a Redwood top and Madagascar rosewood back and sides, is the most widely circulated Woodspeak acoustic in the market, described by Eddie's Guitars simply as a guitar that sounds like it has been around for a long time, with a truly mature and developed voice and response. That description captures something essential about what Woodspeak builds: instruments that feel fully formed from the first note, with the warmth and character of instruments that have been played and loved for years.
Rare by Design
Woodspeak acoustics are built outside the regular Bourgeois production schedule, which means output is strictly limited and availability is genuinely unpredictable. When an instrument appears it reflects the creative latitude of two master craftsmen building without constraints, and the results speak accordingly.
