Fay Acoustic Guitars — One Model, Perfected
Simon Fay was on track to begin graduate studies in Virology when lutherie intervened and changed everything. That scientific background never left him. His approach to building is as rigorous and methodical as laboratory research, driven by what he describes as the most promising characteristic of a great luthier: a drive for perfection. It makes no sense, he says, to spend 150 hours on an instrument just to make it okay.
He builds from his workshop in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, and he builds one model. Not one model family. One model, the Modern OM, which he has refined continuously since he first conceived it, and which he describes as a contemporary redesign of the traditional Martin OM heavily influenced by the elegance and beauty of the classical guitar. That singular focus has produced instruments of unusual depth and consistency, each one the product of a builder who has spent years thinking about nothing else.
The Modern OM
Simon describes his approach with rare directness: a strong emphasis on clarity, note separation, and balance, but not at the expense of tonal complexity and warmth. The response is lively and vibrant with excellent volume and projection, and the design is versatile enough to accommodate everything from melodic fingerstyle to heavy strumming without asking the player to compromise.
The classical guitar influence is visible and audible throughout. The body geometry, the voicing priorities, the way the top is prepared and the bracing is executed all reflect the sensibility of an instrument builder who has studied the classical tradition as closely as the steel-string one. The Matsuda-style deconstructed rosettes that appear across the lineup capture the same spirit: visual elements that appear discovered rather than designed, natural and deliberate in equal measure.
Standard appointments across the Model One include ebony fingerboards and bridges, ebony bindings with maple and ebony mitered purflings, one-piece mahogany necks, Alessi tuners, and dyed cow bone nuts, saddles, and bridge pins. Tonewood combinations have included German spruce and Australian Blackwood, Engelmann spruce and black and white ebony, Carpathian spruce and Indian rosewood, and other carefully considered pairings, each one chosen in service of the specific voice the instrument is built to produce.
For Players Who Want One Thing Done Perfectly
Simon Fay is not trying to cover every corner of the market. He is trying to build the finest OM-style guitar he is capable of building, one instrument at a time, to a standard that improves with every build. The players and dealers who have found him, including Eddie's Guitars and The Acoustic Music Company in the UK, arrive at the same conclusion without prompting: this is one of the most consistently excellent OM-style guitars being built anywhere in the world today.
