Michel Aboudib Acoustic Guitars — Born in Syria, Built in France, Awakened by Sound
Michel Aboudib was born in Syria, lived in France and the United States, and describes himself as being, in a way, from nowhere. Each of those cultures has left something in him, and all of them find their way into the instruments he builds today from his workshop in Portet-sur-Garonne, near Toulouse, in the south of France.
He came to lutherie through a life shaped by music, craftsmanship, art, and science in equal measure. He had already been building guitars professionally for several years and developing a devoted following when he decided he wanted more: better skills, deeper understanding, finer intuition. He reached out to Ervin Somogyi in Oakland. After the customary interview process, Somogyi accepted him. The apprenticeship that followed was, by Michel's own account, a coming-of-age journey in lutherie: intense, liberating, and empowering. He returned to France with a fully formed technical and artistic vocabulary and an understanding of voicing that very few independent builders in the world possess.
Every Aboudib guitar is built entirely by hand, entirely by Michel, in a workshop where time slows to the rhythm of creation. The goal every time is an instrument with a single note that develops, expands, and seems to contain a whole world.
All the Senses
Michel's approach to lutherie is rooted in the conviction that all of the senses are involved in our relationship with a guitar. The aesthetics of the grain and the shapes build expectation before the instrument is even lifted. The smell of the tonewoods and the resins in the varnish are the first promise of another world. The texture of the finish and the vibrations that carry into the player's body follow. The sound, which he considers the most important part, creates every relationship: between player and guitar, and between both and the listener.
That philosophy produces instruments of unusual unity and coherence, where the visual design, the material choices, and the acoustic voice feel like expressions of a single intention rather than components assembled from separate decisions.
The Tonewoods
Michel's palette is as wide and adventurous as his background. Austrian Moon Spruce, Carpathian spruce, Tunnel Redwood, European spruce, and Bois de Rose tops have appeared in recent builds, paired with Indian rosewood, wenge, koa, and Madagascar rosewood back and sides. Somogyi-inspired carved rosettes in Celtic and Monet-inspired patterns, textured top treatments, and glitter finishes give each instrument a visual identity as carefully considered as its acoustic one.
The Models
MA-00 — A 00-sized instrument that brings intimacy and power into unusual balance, with clear, rich bass, honey-like trebles, and a voice that players describe as deeply personal and surprisingly projecting for its body size.
MA-M and MA-O — OM-sized guitars in 14-fret and 12-fret neck join configurations respectively, both highly responsive with clear, crisp trebles and a full though focused bass. Ideal for fingerstyle playing across every genre.
MA-D — A dreadnought with a narrow waist, delivering a full, open, and well-balanced voice with deep, rich bass and the versatility to handle both fingerpicking and strumming with authority. Also available in a 7-string multiscale configuration with a 25 to 26-inch scale length.
MA-P — A parlor-sized instrument and the most intimate model in the lineup, shaped from traditional proportions and voiced for warmth, midrange presence, and the kind of nuanced touch sensitivity that small-body players prize above all.
MA-SII — Michel's homage to his mentor Ervin Somogyi, built on the Modified Dreadnought shape that Somogyi pioneered and featuring Somogyi's distinctive carved rosette style adapted with Celtic and other custom patterns. Full, silky, with deep bass and shimmery highs.
