Ryan Acoustic Guitars — Where Aerospace Engineering Meets Acoustic Excellence

In 1987, Kevin Ryan was building precision models of jet fighters for transonic wind tunnel testing at Northrop Grumman's aerospace laboratory in Southern California. At night, he was building guitars. The tools, the mindset, and the standards were the same: tolerances measured in thousandths of an inch, materials selected for their structural and acoustic properties rather than tradition, and a refusal to accept a design until it performed as well as the engineering said it should.

That combination of backgrounds produced something the acoustic guitar world had never quite seen before. Ryan was one of the first luthiers to specialize in guitars for modern fingerstyle players, and his background in aerospace engineering led to a fearless approach to design and the use of high-tech tools. Acoustic Guitar Magazine named him one of the most influential builders of the past three decades, and called the Mission Grand Concert a blueprint for scores of other builders and a modern classic. He has now been building for nearly forty years and shows no signs of stopping.

We are proud to be the number one retailer of Ryan Guitars, with a close and ongoing relationship with Kevin and his team that gives our customers direct access to the full depth of what Ryan Guitars offers.

The Engineering Behind the Sound

Every innovation Kevin has introduced to the Ryan lineup over the decades has been driven by the same two criteria: it must have a meaningful impact on the player in sound or ergonomics, and it must not compromise structural integrity. No exceptions.

His guitars feature a higher and tighter waist, a body depth that is a full inch deeper at the lower bout than the upper bout, and a more profoundly arched back, all designed to make the guitar as comfortable and ergonomic as possible while maximizing bass response. The Ryan Bevel, which Kevin invented around 2002 after being inspired by Grit Laskin's arm rest concept, has since become one of the most widely imitated ergonomic features in boutique lutherie. The Acoustic Flutes, miniature oval soundports integrated directly into the bevel, project sound toward both the player and the audience simultaneously. The Acoustic Honeycomb, developed through years of prototyping and structural analysis, introduces a double-top concept into a targeted area of the soundboard to dramatically reduce mass while improving both structural integrity and acoustic responsiveness. The laser-sculpted EO bracing takes the same philosophy further, removing material from the soundboard only where the engineering confirms it is safe and beneficial to do so.

The result of all of this is an instrument that produces a tonal volume, sustain, and dynamic range that its body size has no right to deliver, combined with an ergonomic comfort that makes long playing sessions feel effortless.

The Tonewoods

Kevin's wood selection is among the most adventurous and carefully considered in independent lutherie. Submersion redwood, salvaged from logs lost to alpine logging rivers for hundreds of years, emerges from cold mineral-rich waters with dynamic coloration and a tonal complexity that conventional tonewoods cannot approach. The moonburst tops, a natural sunburst effect discovered when Kevin joined submersion redwood plates at the salmon-colored side rather than the dark side, are among the most visually dramatic tonewoods ever used in a production acoustic guitar. Master grade Brazilian rosewood back and sides, hand-selected from Kevin's private reserve, represent the pinnacle of the Ryan material palette. Indian rosewood, Madagascar rosewood, koa, cocobolo, and a range of premium alternatives are available across the models, with European spruce, Sitka spruce, Western Red Cedar, and sinker redwood as top options.

The Models

Nightingale Grand Fingerstyle — Ryan's flagship model and the instrument that most completely expresses the full range of his innovations. A slightly smaller and shallower body than the Cathedral, the Nightingale prioritizes focused tonal clarity, extraordinary dynamic range, and the kind of intimate responsiveness that makes it the preferred choice for advanced fingerstyle players who want every nuance of their technique reflected back to them. Available with the full range of Ryan's ergonomic and acoustic features as standard.

Cathedral Grand Fingerstyle — The largest and most powerful model in the Ryan lineup, delivering the bass depth, tonal complexity, and acoustic volume that players who perform without amplification demand. The Cathedral retains all of the Ryan signature ergonomic and acoustic engineering in a body that fills a room with authority.

Mission Grand Concert — The guitar that started it all and the model Acoustic Guitar Magazine called a blueprint for scores of other builders. The Mission balances the focus and comfort of a smaller body with the powerful acoustic voice of the deeper lower bout, and remains one of the most versatile and celebrated fingerstyle guitars ever designed.

Abbey Parlor — The most intimate model in the Ryan lineup, and one that rewards the player who approaches it with restraint and nuance above all. The Abbey delivers the full Ryan acoustic engineering in a compact, comfortable, beautifully voiced instrument that excels in recording, late-night playing, and the kind of personal musical exploration that doesn't need an audience.

Played by the Finest Fingerstyle Players in the World

Ryan's clientele has always been drawn from the upper tier of acoustic playing: Pierre Bensusan, Michael Chapdelaine, Pat Donahue, Peter Finger, Laurence Juber, and Eric Lugosch have all made Ryan guitars central to their sound. Acoustic Guitar's readers have honored Ryan with multiple Player's Choice Awards. The instruments earn that loyalty through performance alone.

As the number one Ryan Guitars retailer, we maintain the deepest inventory of Ryan instruments available anywhere outside Kevin's own workshop, and our relationship with the Ryan team means we can guide you through the full specification process with the knowledge and access that only comes from years of close partnership.
