Riviere Acoustic Guitars — Asheville's Most Exciting New Luthier
Judson Riviere has been obsessed with guitars since he was old enough to pick one up. As a teenager in Minnesota he was already building kits and doing his own setups, chasing a better sound with every attempt. That obsession led him straight out of high school to the Guitar Repair and Building Program at Minnesota State College Southeast in Red Wing, one of the most respected lutherie programs in the country. From there he spent three years in repair work at Steve Mason Luthiers and Violin in Lawrence, Kansas, developing the kind of deep diagnostic understanding of how guitars function, fail, and improve that no building-only curriculum can teach.
Then, in 2019, he did what very few aspiring luthiers get the chance to do. He contacted Jason Kostal in Arizona, showed him his work, and was offered a multi-year apprenticeship. He completed it in 2022, launched Riviere Guitars in Asheville, North Carolina, and has been building one exceptional instrument at a time ever since.
His Own Voice
Dream Guitars, which was among the first dealers to carry his work and sold his inaugural instrument before it was even listed online, put it well: while you can see Jud's lineage from his work with Jason Kostal, this guitar is very much his own creation. The Kostal influence is audible in the orchestral warmth, sustained fundamentals, and dynamic responsiveness that characterize the Riviere sound. What Jud has added is his own visual identity, signature mosaic rosettes, resin-infused burl appointments, arm bevels as standard, and a level of fit and finish that players and dealers describe consistently as immaculate.
The Model
Riviere Guitars currently builds the OM as its primary model, a responsive and versatile Orchestra Model voiced individually for each player who commissions one. Tonewood combinations have included Swiss Moon Spruce and Honduran Rosewood, Italian Spruce and old-growth East Indian Rosewood, and other premium pairings sourced for their acoustic merit and visual character in equal measure. Standard and cutaway configurations are both available, with optional arm bevel and soundport for players who want the full ergonomic and tonal package.
