Richard Hoover, founder of Santa Cruz Guitar Company, has spent decades refining the art of acoustic guitar building, studying the finest prewar instruments ever made and distilling their magic into every guitar that leaves his shop. The 1934 D Custom stands as one of his purest expressions of that pursuit.

Its voice begins with an Old Growth Adirondack spruce top, chosen for its remarkable power, headroom, and responsiveness. Paired with Old Growth Honduran mahogany back and sides, the result is the unmistakable dry, woody authority that made the finest vintage dreadnoughts legendary. There is a muscular clarity to every note, with a strong fundamental, rich midrange, and the kind of open, airy projection that seems to expand the harder you lean into it. Whether played with a flatpick or a bare hand, this guitar has the rare ability to sound both commanding and intimate at the same time.

Inside, Santa Cruz uses advanced X bracing carved from Old Growth Adirondack spruce and carefully scalloped for maximum resonance and balance. Hot hide glue construction ties the entire instrument together with the same traditional methods used on the most coveted guitars of the 1930s, allowing every piece of wood to vibrate as one. The visual details are understated and deeply elegant. Tortoise body binding frames the body with vintage warmth, while black fingerboard binding and a vintage style rosette keep the look faithful to its inspiration. A thin black backstrip runs down the center of the mahogany back, and the Brazilian rosewood headstock veneer gives the instrument an extra touch of richness and distinction.
