For years, Rye Bear has quietly built a reputation as one of the most inventive and uncompromising voices in modern acoustic guitar making. Working in British Columbia, Bear blends old world handcraft with contemporary acoustic engineering, drawing inspiration from the traditions of the great steel string builders while refusing to be limited by them. His guitars are known for their extraordinary responsiveness, feather-light construction, and use of rare, often storied materials. This Super Parlour stands as one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy.
At first glance, the guitar feels almost elemental. The top is cut from 600 year old Western Red Cedar salvaged from a swamp on Vancouver Island, its perfectly straight, silken grain glowing beneath a warm, earthy finish. There is a quiet depth to the cedar, almost like aged bronze or weathered timber, that gives the instrument an unmistakable sense of history. Framed by delicate Pernambuco bindings and a black, maple, black rosette with a Pernambuco bound soundhole, the entire face of the guitar appears both understated and impossibly refined.
The back and sides tell an even more remarkable story. The Brazilian rosewood used here began life more than 150 years ago as a bed frame in Lisbon, Portugal, before being carefully re-sawn and reborn as tonewood. Its dark chocolate hues and subtle flashes of reddish undertone lend the guitar an almost architectural beauty, especially on the striking back where the Pernambuco backstrap and maple headstock pinstripe purfling add just enough contrast to highlight the richness of the wood. The 150 year old Brazilian rosewood continues through the bridge, fingerboard, and headstock veneer, creating a visual continuity that feels seamless and deeply intentional.
Yet this guitar is far more than a showcase of rare materials. Under the cedar top lies Rye Bear’s advanced Paulownia carbon falcate bracing system, paired with his laminated sides construction. Together they create an instrument of remarkable efficiency and power. The guitar weighs only 6 pounds, 5 ounces, but it delivers a voice that feels larger than its compact Super Parlour body would ever suggest. The air resonance is tuned to 96hz, with top and back resonances at 179hz and 237hz respectively, giving the instrument a perfectly balanced, almost orchestral response. The bass is deep and blooming, the midrange rich and vocal, and the trebles shimmer with a sweetness that seems to hang in the air long after the note is played.
The 12 fret neck joint further enhances that character, lending the guitar an openness and warmth that suits fingerstyle playing beautifully while still giving flatpicked lines surprising authority. The Wenge neck has a comfortable C profile, paired with a 16 to 20 inch compound radius fingerboard for an effortlessly natural feel up and down the neck. With a 1.77 inch nut width, 2.28 inch bridge spacing, and full 25.4 inch scale length, the guitar offers generous room for the right and left hand without ever feeling oversized.
Every final detail has been executed with the same level of care. Stainless steel frets with hemispherical fret ends make the neck feel impossibly smooth beneath the fingers. The Scheller tuning machines with ebony buttons offer flawless precision and a touch of understated elegance. Even the included Visesnut case feels worthy of an instrument this special.
This is not simply a guitar assembled from extraordinary materials. It is a deeply personal instrument, built from wood that has already lived several lifetimes and shaped by a luthier whose work continues to push the boundaries of what an acoustic guitar can be.
