There are builders who make fine guitars, and then there are luthiers who shape an identity into wood. Michel Pellerin belongs firmly in the second camp.

Based in Canada, Michel has spent decades refining a voice that is equal parts precision engineering and artistic instinct. Deeply influenced by the modern responsive school of lutherie, including the structural and tonal philosophies pioneered by Ervin Somogyi, Michel approaches each instrument as a living system. His work is defined by relentless attention to detail, advanced bracing concepts, and a fearless use of extraordinary tonewoods. The result is not simply a beautiful guitar, but an instrument that feels alive under the hands.

This Grand Auditorium Cutaway is a masterclass.

The top is salvaged sinker cedar recovered from Haida Gwaii, British Columbia. Time spent submerged has deepened its color and density, producing a responsiveness that is immediate and warm, yet surprisingly powerful. It is braced with 100 year old red spruce in a post-Somogyi XXX configuration, carefully voiced to maximize headroom, sustain, and dynamic range. The guitar reacts to the lightest touch, but it will not fold under a heavy right hand.

The back and sides are Crelicam ebony, selected for both tonal authority and visual drama. Michel doubles the sides using dyed yellow cedar and ebony, increasing structural rigidity and enhancing projection. The low end is focused and piano-like, the midrange complex, and the trebles crystalline without harshness.

Visually, the instrument carries a striking Art Deco elegance. The custom rosette blends rosewood, flame maple, segmented flame maple, and mother of pearl strips in a refined geometric pattern. Ebony body bindings are framed by wide flame maple top purfling, echoed by the ebony headstock veneer with delicate maple lines. A segmented ebony backstrip ties it all together with quiet confidence.

The 12th fret features an Art Deco live edge burl rectangle inlay, subtle yet unmistakable. MOP side dots guide the player without distraction. Even the clear pickguard is chosen to preserve the uninterrupted visual flow of the sinker cedar top.

Under the hood, nothing is ordinary. A shellac super blonde internal body finish enhances resonance. The 2 way adjustable truss rod is reinforced with dual ebony bars. Medium EVO gold frets sit on a Gaboon ebony fingerboard with ebony binding and fine maple purfling. The 16 inch radius and 25 to 26 inch multiscale length, straight at the 12th fret, create superb tension balance across the strings.

The Honduran mahogany neck feels substantial with a 1.8 inch nut width and 2.25 inch bridge spacing, offering room for articulate fingerstyle work while remaining comfortable for complex chord voicings. The Gaboon ebony pinless bridge transfers energy efficiently to the top, while bone nut and saddle ensure clarity and sustain.

A side soundport gives the player an intimate connection to the instrument’s voice. An ebony armrest adds comfort without sacrificing aesthetic continuity. Gotoh 510 Cosmo Black tuners with ebony buttons provide silky precision. All of it is wrapped in a very thin high gloss polyurethane finish across the body, neck, and headstock, preserving resonance while delivering lasting protection.

At just 4 pounds 15 ounces, this Grand Auditorium is remarkably light for such a structurally advanced instrument. It feels effortless in the lap, yet its voice is anything but delicate.

This is not a production guitar dressed in luxury materials. It is a luthier’s statement piece. Every brace, every purfling line, every gram of mass has been considered. If you are searching for a modern fingerstyle instrument with depth, projection, and unmistakable personality, this Michel Pellerin stands at the top of that conversation.
