The Collings D1A Hill Country in Adirondack spruce and Honduran mahogany is a powerful tribute to the late founder Bill Collings, whose uncompromising standards reshaped modern American acoustic guitar building. This model carries his spirit forward with clarity, authority, and a stripped down aesthetic that puts tone above all else.
At the heart of this instrument is a responsive Adirondack spruce top paired with Honduran mahogany back and sides, a classic combination that delivers headroom, punch, and dry fundamental focus. The Hill Country build and voicing takes that foundation and leans into warmth and openness. The scalloped Sitka spruce X brace pattern, notably built without a tongue brace, allows the top to move freely, producing a wide dynamic range and a woody, broken in character right out of the case.
The Honduran mahogany neck features the Hill Country large profile, full in the hand but never cumbersome. It transitions from a modified C to a modified V with a rounded fingerboard edge, giving you substance and comfort in equal measure. The 14 inch to 26 inch compound radius ebony fingerboard with gold MOP dots feels fast and natural, anchored by medium 18 percent nickel silver frets. Aged bone at the 1 3/4 inch nut and cutthrough saddle ensure clean transfer of energy to the ebony belly style bridge with 2 5/16 inch spacing.
Visually, the guitar is purposefully restrained. Tortoise body binding, ebony fingerboard binding, and a hand poured tortoise pickguard with matching rosette ring, wedge, and heel cap create a cohesive, artisan look. The ebony peghead veneer is left free of a front logo, with the Collings name stamped discreetly on the back. Relic nickel Waverly tuners, a square peghead profile with volute, and a 1 style walnut backstrip complete the vintage inspired presentation.
Built with a mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint and a fully adjustable truss rod, this D1A is engineered for stability and longevity. The ultra thin vintage satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish on both body and neck keeps the instrument resonant and alive in your hands. At just 4 pounds 6 ounces, it feels featherlight yet solid, strung with D'Addario EJ 17 strings and housed in a deluxe hardshell case.
This is not just a dreadnought. It is a focused, no nonsense expression of what made Bill Collings legendary: precision craftsmanship, tonal honesty, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.
