There are guitars that impress, and then there are guitars that tell a story before a single note is played. This Bourgeois Eddie’s Guitars Exclusive Small Jumbo Carved Back in Adirondack Spruce and “Roadkill” Maple, #1 of just 6 ever built, firmly belongs in the latter category.

At the heart of it all is Dana Bourgeois, a builder who has spent decades behind the bench refining his craft to a level that few ever reach. As the founder of Bourgeois Guitars, his instruments are defined by a relentless pursuit of tonal perfection, and this piece stands as a vivid example of that legacy in full bloom.

The story begins with the wood. The carved back and sides are fashioned from a singularly rare cache of Figured “Roadkill” Maple, a name as unforgettable as the material itself. Discovered deep in the Maine wilderness by Bourgeois craftsmen James Witkus and James Cook, the fallen maple log lay roadside, waiting to be noticed. Recognizing something special, they hauled it onto a truck and processed it by hand. What emerged was extraordinary: maple alive with rare figure, depth, and color, unlike anything typically seen. That sense of discovery and reverence is preserved in every inch of this guitar.

Paired with that is a powerful Adirondack Spruce top, driven by aged tone torrefied Adirondack bracing, delivering the headroom, responsiveness, and dynamic range that discerning players demand. The carved back Small Jumbo body adds a layer of dimensionality and projection that feels both intimate and expansive.

Visually, this instrument steps into another realm entirely thanks to Andrew Olson, who created a bespoke Art Deco inlay suite exclusively for this limited run. Flowing across the ebony fingerboard, bridge wings, and headstock in luminous mother-of-pearl, the design evokes the elegance and geometry of a bygone era while remaining unmistakably modern. The 42 Style Soloist top purfling, Ziricote bindings, and Oval Soloist rosette frame the guitar with a refined architectural balance that rewards close inspection.

Every detail reinforces its status as a true collector’s piece: a figured maple neck with a rosewood stringer, ebony fingerboard and belly bridge, gold Waverly tuners with ebony buttons, and antique walrus ivory bridge and end pins. The high gloss finish across body, neck, and headstock gives the figured maple a three-dimensional glow that shifts with the light.

In the hands, the short 25" scale, 1 3/4" nut width, and 2 5/16" bridge spacing create a playing experience that feels effortless and inviting, while the remarkably light 4 lb 6 oz build enhances resonance and responsiveness.

Housed in a Hoffee carbon fiber custom flight case and bearing its Limited Edition signature label, this is more than an instrument. It is a moment captured: decades of mastery, a once-in-a-lifetime piece of wood, and a design vision brought to life in just six expressions.

Number 1 of 6. The beginning of a very short story, and one that will not be repeated.
