The Irvin Guitars SP Signature Parlor – Lutz Spruce & Koa is an exceptional expression of craftsmanship, musicality, and design from luthier Wayne Irvin Johnson—a builder whose work is steeped in artistic integrity and an intimate understanding of what a guitar should offer to the soul of a player. With deep roots as a performing artist and songwriter, Wayne brings a rare sensitivity to his instruments—each guitar is not only acoustically superb but emotionally resonant, designed by someone who knows firsthand how an instrument can inspire creation.
This 12-fret parlor with a Florentine cutaway is Wayne’s reimagining of the classic small-bodied guitar: refined, dynamic, and visually arresting. The sonic-graded Lutz spruce top, sourced from Pacific Rim Tonewoods, is the tonal engine of this guitar, chosen for its perfect balance of headroom and softness, sparkle and warmth. Paired with highly figured koa back and sides, the SP Signature Parlor produces a voice that is vibrant, articulate, and complex—ideal for nuanced fingerstyle, lyrical accompaniment, and intimate solo performance.
From a visual standpoint, the SP Parlor is a masterpiece. Its tight, elegant silhouette—just 9 7/8” across the upper bout and 13 7/8” at the lower—is accentuated by a rich array of appointments. Ebony bindings frame the guitar with understated class, while the black/maple/black – koa – black/maple/black top purfling creates an intricate edge detail that evokes a sense of hand-tuned luxury. The koa and paua rosette, along with a koa backstrap, elevate the design with natural shimmer and contrast. Even the fingerboard is bordered with maple/black/maple purfling, creating continuity and visual balance from headstock to tail.
The 5-piece laminated neck, composed of mahogany, curly maple, and padauk, adds strength and character, while feeling effortless in hand. A short 24.9” scale length paired with a 12-fret neck joint brings warmth and elasticity to the tone, while keeping the playing experience smooth and supple. Despite its compact dimensions—just 3 1/4” deep at the heel and 4 1/4” at the tail, with a body length of 19 1/2”—this parlor sings with surprising depth and clarity, aided by the subtle enhancement of an upper bout sound port that gives the player an immersive, stereo-like response.
Practical and beautiful details abound: an ebony fingerboard and bridge, ebony bridge pins with brass rings and paua dots, a bone nut and saddle, and Gotoh 510 black chrome tuners with koa buttons that offer effortless tuning precision and a touch of natural elegance. The ebony headstock veneer ties the instrument together, a dark and luxurious capstone to an already striking aesthetic.
Weighing in at only 3 lb 14 oz, this SP Signature Parlor is incredibly lightweight and intimate, making it an ideal companion for the stage, the studio, or the writing room. Like every Irvin guitar, it comes housed in a Cross Rock case—the perfect protector for such a finely crafted piece of luthiery.
Ultimately, the SP Signature Parlor is more than a boutique guitar—it's a reflection of Wayne Irvin Johnson’s personal journey through music, his technical excellence as a luthier, and his belief that the best instruments are the ones that disappear in the hands of the artist, leaving only expression, inspiration, and connection behind.
