About Bourgeois Guitars

Website: https://bourgeoisguitars.com/

Founded by master luthier Dana Bourgeois in the rolling woods of Lewiston, Maine, Bourgeois Guitars blends old-world craftsmanship with modern innovation. Each year, these guitars and mandolins are carefully handcrafted for guitarists who demand top-tier tone and playability. Only around 400 guitars are produced a year, making them highly coveted instruments.

Best Bourgeois Models

  • Bourgeois Touchstone Series. These models, like the Limited Edition Touchstone Hawaiian Country Boy, sport affordable Eastman-made bodies that still deliver musicality and voicing.
  • Bourgeois Professional Series. Featuring all-mahogany models like the Bourgeois Blues and Hog Top, this series is designed for players needing warmth and punch. These guitars bring an earthy tone with strong midrange character.
  • Bourgeois Heirloom Series. Featuring models like the Artist, these high-end guitars combine aged spruce and other premium woods with refined detailing for studio and stage performance.
  • Bourgeois Legacy Series. The Legacy Series features coveted models like the DB Signature and L-DB. It showcases the brand’s most artistic designs, from the elegant fingerstyles of the Soloist to the powerful dreadnoughts of the cross-genre Banjo Killer.
  • Bourgeois Aged Tone Series. Featuring models like the Large Soundhole, this series contains torrefied woods to produce vintage sounds at accessible price points.
  • Bourgeois Custom Series. Custom Series instruments are fully built to order, tailored to players’ tone, fit, and aesthetic preferences.

Choosing the Right Bourgeois Instrument

Budget

Prices range from around $3,500 for the Touchstone series to over $8,000 for Heirloom, Legacy, and Custom guitars. Decide your upper limit, then match the series to the sound and features you value most. You can also explore pre-owned models to cut costs.

Sound

Bourgeois guitars deliver balanced tones with strong projection and dynamic range. For sweetness and warmth, for example, choose spruce tops. Conversely, for rich midrange, go with mahogany or rosewood.

Tonewood

The woods used in each instrument give the guitar its unique sound. Popular options include the following.

  • Brazilian Rosewood: Provides deep, lush bass and sparkling overtones.
  • Indian Rosewood: Offers a classic, well-balanced voice with warm lows and bright highs.
  • Koa: Brings sweet mids and a tone that grows richer over time.
  • Madagascar Rosewood: Delivers bold tone with tight low-end definition.
  • Adirondack Spruce: Gives room-filling projection and vintage-style clarity.
  • Ebony: Adds crisp articulation and dynamic response.
  • Italian Spruce: Offers refined clarity with elegant top-end sparkle.
  • Sinker Mahogany: Provides mid-focused warmth and punch.
  • Cocobolo: Yields a bright, resonant tone with rich sustain.
  • Bearclaw Sitka Spruce: Remains versatile by balancing projection, clarity, and warmth.

Bridge Types

All Bourgeois guitars use traditional pinned rosewood or ebony bridges, ensuring solid tone transfer and easy string changes.

Colors

Finishes lean tasteful for this brand, featuring natural woods with gloss or satin with a slight sunburst. Custom and Heirloom models sometimes offer subtle aesthetic detailing like herringbone or vintage-inspired binding.

Genre and Style Compatibility

These guitars shine in folk, fingerstyle, bluegrass, singer-songwriter, and studio work. Dreadnoughts project beautifully for strumming, while Soloist and Artist models bring clarity and balance for fingerpicking.

Neck Profile

Most models use a vintage-inspired C or V profile that feels full yet comfortable. Bolt-on necks simplify resets and adjustments without compromising tone.

Frets and Fingerboards

Equipped with medium-jumbo frets and rosewood or ebony fingerboards, Bourgeois guitars offer easy playability, precise fretwork, and smooth bends for all styles.

Body Styles

Bourgeois guitars are known not only for their tonewoods and craftsmanship, but also for their versatile body shapes, each offering a distinct voice and playing experience. Paired with the right arm bevels and cutaways, these instruments deliver top-tier sound for discerning musicians.

Some of their most popular body styles include:

  • The Bourgeois L-DBO, a modern reimagining of the classic Depression-era small-body guitar.
  • The Bourgeois OM (Orchestra Model), one of the most balanced and versatile body styles in the brand’s lineup.
  • The Bourgeois Slope D (Slope Shoulder), featuring a short 25″ scale length.
