The Gibson Custom Shop PSL '59 Les Paul Standard Brazilian VOS is an extraordinary recreation of one of the most revered electric guitars ever produced—meticulously crafted to capture the spirit, tone, and aesthetic of an original 1959 Burst. Featured on Page 47 of the celebrated reference book Beauty of the Burst, this instrument pays homage to the legendary late-’50s Les Pauls that defined generations of music. With historically precise construction, premium tonewoods, and a Vintage Original Spec (VOS) finish, it stands as both a collector-grade piece and a world-class performance instrument.
True to the iconic Les Paul formula, the guitar features a solid, non-weight-relieved body constructed from a single piece of lightweight mahogany, paired with a hand-picked AAA figured maple top. The carved maple cap delivers brilliant articulation and harmonic complexity, while the mahogany back provides warmth, depth, and exceptional sustain. Finished in nitrocellulose lacquer with Gibson’s VOS vintage patina treatment, the instrument exudes the subtle sheen and lightly aged character of a well-preserved original. Cream body binding and meticulously accurate plastics complete the authentic late-’50s presentation.
The neck is carved from solid mahogany and shaped to a comfortable 50s Rounded Medium C profile—substantial yet inviting in hand. It joins the body via a long tenon, hide glue fit, maximizing tonal transfer and sustain in true vintage fashion. The 24.75" scale length pairs with a rare and highly sought-after Brazilian rosewood fingerboard, offering exceptional tonal richness and a smooth, glassy playing surface. With a 12" radius, 22 Historic Medium-Jumbo Jescar FW45100 frets, aged cellulose trapezoid inlays, and tortoiseshell side dots, every detail reflects the look and feel of an original 1959 example. A nylon nut, cut to a 1.687" width, further enhances tuning stability and authentic tonal response.
Hardware appointments are equally faithful to period specifications. The guitar features a ’59 Historic ABR-1 bridge without retention wire and a lightweight aluminum stop bar tailpiece, contributing to its lively resonance and dynamic sensitivity. Kluson single-line, single-ring tuning machines provide classic aesthetics and dependable performance. True Historic top hat gold knobs, an amber Catalin switch tip, cream mounting rings, and aluminum strap buttons round out the era-correct hardware package with exceptional attention to detail.
At the heart of its legendary tone are a pair of Custombucker Alnico 3 unpotted humbuckers. Designed to replicate the airy, articulate character of original PAF pickups, these unpotted pickups deliver remarkable clarity, harmonic bloom, and dynamic responsiveness. The neck pickup produces warm, vocal-like sustain, while the bridge pickup offers crisp attack and authoritative midrange bite. Wired with CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors, the electronics provide smooth, musical control across both volume and tone circuits. A 3-way Switchcraft selector and Switchcraft 1/4" output jack ensure reliable, professional-grade performance. Strung with .010–.046 gauge strings, the instrument arrives ready for expressive bends, articulate rhythm work, and soaring lead lines.
Housed in a brown/pink Lifton reissue 5-latch case and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity, this PSL ’59 Les Paul Standard Brazilian VOS represents the pinnacle of Gibson Custom Shop craftsmanship. Combining historically accurate construction, premium materials, and the prestige of its association with Beauty of the Burst, it is a remarkable tribute to the golden era of the Les Paul—built to inspire players and captivate collectors alike.
