The Collings OM1 JL Julian Lage is a study in restraint, touch, and musical intention. Built in collaboration with Julian Lage, this model reflects his pursuit of clarity, nuance, and dynamic control in a traditional OM platform refined to a very personal standard.
At its core is a Sitka spruce top paired with Honduran mahogany back and sides, a classic combination chosen for balance and immediacy. The Sitka brings headroom and articulation, while the mahogany delivers warmth, woody midrange focus, and quick note response. Collings’ Traditional Series build and voicing, along with a custom pre-war scalloped X-brace pattern without a tongue brace, give this guitar an open, broken-in character straight out of the case. It is responsive under a light touch but holds together beautifully when pushed, making it equally suited for intricate fingerstyle and assertive flatpicking.
The custom JL neck carve measures .829" at the first fret and .970" at the ninth, offering a substantial yet comfortable feel that encourages relaxed, confident playing. Combined with the 1 11/16" bone nut, 25 1/2" scale length, and a 14" to 26" compound radius ebony fingerboard with gold MOP short dots, the playability is effortless across the entire register. The mortise and tenon hybrid neck joint and fully adjustable truss rod ensure long-term stability, while medium 18% nickel-silver frets provide a familiar, articulate feel.
Aesthetically, the OM1 JL stays true to its understated roots. Tortoise body binding with custom wood purflings, a custom wood rosette, and a 1-style walnut backstrip give it vintage-inspired character without excess. The ebony peghead veneer with gold MOP Collings script logo, relic nickel Waverly tuners with vintage oval buttons, and ebony bridge with 2 3/16" spacing complete the timeless look. Ebony bridge pins with MOP dots and a tortoise pickguard add subtle finishing touches.
Finished in custom satin nitrocellulose lacquer on both the body and neck, the guitar feels broken-in and alive in the hands. At just 3 lbs 10 oz, it is remarkably lightweight and resonant, measuring 19 1/4" in body length, 15" across the lower bout, and 4 1/8" in depth. It ships with D’Addario NB1253 strings and a deluxe hardshell case.
The OM1 JL is not about flash. It is about touch, tone, and connection. Every detail serves the music.
