Collings I35 Deluxe Electric Guitar Review

IMG_2045Last week, I reviewed a Collings electric guitar built primarily for jazz guitarists. However, for those musicians who specialize in a wider variety of styles rather than a single genre, it helps to have a guitar that is versatile enough to bring out the best parts of each musical form. The Collings I35 Deluxe is one of the most versatile Collings electric guitars and will find its place in practically any playing environment.

Adaptable Model is Multi-genre Friendly

Whether you play country, rock n’ roll, rockabilly, classic blues, midrangy jazz, or all of the above, the Collings I35 Deluxe will never get in the way of your music. This versatility comes from the models wide range; both bass and treble are extremely dynamic.

The only genre that is better left to a different guitar is heavy metal. The Collings I35 Deluxe boasts the ability to minimize feedback, but when the volume is pushed too high on an amp, there is noticeable feedback. However, this model eliminates feedback when paired with the right guitar amp at the right volume. A clean amp with a little bit of gain, such as a quality small tube combo, is ideal. Don’t have a small tube combo? Luckily the Collings I35 Deluxe speaks with a different voice using different amps. Most likely this guitar will work great with an amp you already own. Try it out with a variety of amplifiers and discover just how adaptable the this guitar really is.

Semi-Hollow Mahogany Body Bridges Gaps Between Worlds

Loosely inspired by the Gibson 335 electric, the Collings I35 Deluxe’s semi-hollow body presents the best of both worlds: the solid part increases sustain while the hollow part gives a bigger, more responsive sound. However, this Collings guitar has a smaller body than the Gibson 335, making it more comfortable to play.

Same Price, Better Quality

Many popular, high quality brands are selling more expensive guitars than ever. However, the price you pay for those guitars is more for the brand name than any particular luxury accessory. Collings Guitars offer similar prices, but also provide the boutique quality you deserve for the payment.

Premium Quilted Maple Top

The Collings I35 Deluxe’s top showcases a tobacco sunburst coloring with a premium quilt maple design. This perfect spray work is captivating without looking gaudy and is complemented by mother of pearl inlays in the neck.

Grained Ivoroid Knobs & Tuners

The knobs and tuners on the Collings I35 Deluxe serve their usual practical purpose while also being aesthetically pleasing. Grained ivoroid, or faux ivory, are aged in block form for a year to eliminate the possibility of shrinkage or cracking. Once aged, a CNC machine route sthe edge of the knobs and tuners before they’re hand polished. The resulting effects are smooth, pearly accessories that are both eye-catching and sophisticated.

My Verdict

The Collings I35 Deluxe is an electric guitar for the experienced player who has the right appreciation—and the right funds—for a high quality boutique guitar. While it may not be the best choice the most intense genre of heavy metal, its versatility in all other styles makes it the perfect companion for a diversified musician.
